Hey {{First Name}}, Anthony here from The Retention Report.

Most DTC brands guess when to send retention emails.

They wait an arbitrary number of days, or worse, what someone ELSE is doing on their band.

But there’s a single chart that removes the guessing entirely, and it changes how you time retention.

You’re looking at it above.

This is a Time Between Orders chart pulled from Hiro Analytics.

It shows exactly how long customers typically wait before placing their next order.

And once you see this, your retention strategy changes fast.

What this chart is actually telling you

In this example, you can clearly see:

  • A large percentage of customers repurchase within a tight window early on

  • A sharp drop-off after that window passes

  • A long tail of customers who could repurchase, but usually don’t

In plain English:
There’s a specific moment when MOST customers are likely to buy again, and will likely never buy again (and most brands miss it).

Why this matters so much

Most retention programs are built on random timing.

This chart lets you build retention around real customer behavior, not guesses.

Once you know your true repurchase window, you can:

  • Send replenishment emails before customers forget you

  • Time SMS nudges when intent is highest

  • Adjust offers and messaging based on how late someone is in the cycle

  • Stop spamming people who aren’t ready yet

That’s how you pull revenue forward instead of waiting for it.

How we actually use this

We use this chart to answer questions like:

  • When should post-purchase flows actually fire?

  • When does urgency help vs hurt?

  • When should we switch from reminder → incentive?

  • Where does churn really start showing up?

  • Should we segment out customers because we know they don’t buy again until 3 months out

Once you know those answers, retention gets simpler, and way more effective.

The takeaway

If you don’t know when customers naturally reorder, every email focused on getting first-time buyers to re-order is a guess.

One chart fixes that.

It shows you where revenue wants to happen, so you can meet it there.
