Hey {{First Name}},

If you run marketing for a mid-7-figure DTC brand, this is one of those “why isn’t everyone using this?” moments.

There’s a 100% free chart inside Klaviyo that can instantly explain why retention stalls, where churn starts, and what you should actually fix next.

And almost nobody looks at it.

I shared a quick walkthrough of this on Instagram recently (linked below), but let’s talk about WHY this chart matters and how to read it…

The chart most brands don’t know exists

Inside Klaviyo:

Analytics → Metrics → Placed OrderCohorts

This cohort analysis chart groups customers by the month they placed their first order, then shows how often they come back and buy again over time.

In other words:
It shows you how long customers actually stick around, cohort by cohort.

No extra tools. No setup. Just data you already have.

What this tells you (in plain English)

When you look at this chart, three questions matter more than anything else:

1. Does retention increase after a certain number of months?
Some brands see customers “lock in” after month 2 or 3.
That’s a signal to double down on education, replenishment, or subscription nudges before that point.

2. Does retention drop off at a specific month?
Month 2. Month 8. Month 11.
Wherever the cliff is, that’s where churn is forming.

Most brands react after churn happens.
This lets you design flows before it happens.

3. Do you see outlier months with unusually high retention?
These are gold.

Ask yourself:

  • Was there a product drop?

  • A new collection?

  • A category expansion?

  • A specific campaign or offer?

If it worked once, there’s usually a way to engineer it again.

Takeaway:

Retention doesn’t drop randomly, there are patterns.

Free cohort tools like this show you where customers stick, where they fall off, and how to time email automations to keep them buying longer.
